There are plenty (including yours truly) who are convinced that food magically tastes better when it’s served against a spectacular backdrop. So far, the best view I’ve enjoyed with a meal was at Thalassa, Goa, where the sight of the sun sinking into the Arabian Sea, leaving a riot of orange, purple and yellow in its wake, made my grilled jumbo prawns taste heavenly.
If I had a plump wallet and a private jet, I would be enjoying my next meals at these incredible restaurants.
1) Ithaa, Maldives
In the world’s first undersea restaurant, you could be feasting on contemporary European and Asian delicacies at a table that’s 16 feet below sea level. The restaurant has transparent walls which open out to a 270° panoramic underwater views. If deep-sea diving’s not for me, deep sea dining sure will be!
2) Ambrosia, Greece
Sitting right on the edge of Santorini’s volcanic crater, the tables at Ambrosia overlook the remarkably blue Aegean Sea, bordered by Greece’s pretty white houses. In the distance, there are volcanic islands and on the table, some yummy Greek delicacies!
3) Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Tanzania
Imagine sitting high up on a wooden deck, perched on the rim of a volcanic crater, while below, as far as the eye can see, is a patchwork quilt of lush green and warm brown, where wildlife – from wildebeest to large cats – roams freely. And if this isn’t enough, the menu is pretty spectacular, globe-trotting epicures insist.
4) Baan Rim Pa, Thailand
Sun, sand, sea and seafood. What more could a girl ask for? Baan Rim Pa is located in an open-air, two-storied teak house on a cliff, fringed by golden sand. What really brings the setting to life is the symphony of waves crashing into the rocks below. And the Royal Thai cuisine it serves just takes it to the next level.
5) Sierra Mar, California
Located 1200 feet above the crashing waters of the Pacific on the edge of a cliff, it’s safe to say Sierra Mar’s views are pretty darn spectacular. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows open out to a seemingly never-ending horizon. And the menu has gems like Butter Poached Maine Lobster and Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna.
